um, in panel 2 Nashua seems to have finally lost his hair ornaments… but Kip’s curls are out in force!

Quick, Varony, turn back to human and come be diplomatic, these two can’t cope without you!

fixed! Hah, I’d even reminded myself while I was inking not to forget the beads…

I find myself wondering how in the world Nashua ever managed to get married in the first place.

Poor guy keeps digging himself a deeper hole. ;-)

Aw, cut Nashua some slack! He’s had a terrible few months, the last couple of days have been pretty fraught, and frankly Kip IS a pain – she doesn’t think. I like her as a character but I’d be biting my tongue a lot if I had to spend a lot of time around her – never mind if I’d lost my clan, my family, my job and home, been travelling for a long time, have spent months almost entirely alone in hostile territory sleeping patchily by day because the night is dangerous, sent to a completely foreign place (he’s the only elf we’ve seen, never mind the only feral elf) with my last hope being to talk to a person who’s then assassinated before I get to him, had my steed killed – Kaa Nu wasn’t a car, like all working animals he’d’ve played an important a companion and partner role – nearly died myself, been healed, be short of sleep, be worried about Talather – his last link with ‘home’ – then be thrown in with new species and people and had to rely on them, then one of them starts acting in an inexplicable and apparently dangerous way…

One assumes that Nashua’s mate – perhaps most forest elves? – are a bit more pragmatic and grounded than Kip anyway, even without the ‘been a lemur in the royal palace for sixty years’ position of privilege and shelter which added to a somewhat impulsive personality and a tendency to be… hmm, self-centred isn’t really the word, but this sort of behaviour is on a par with the ‘eh, not MY humans’ reaction when Tree Creature Varony had a guard-snack and Kip wierded out the monster; it’s kind of Kip-world-centric, at least. Whereas to live in a small community in the back of beyond with immediate physical dangers outside the gates almost requires a well developed sense of one’s behaviour around other people and awareness of and consideration of other people’s needs and the good of the community – I suspect some of her behaviour comes over as wilful disregard for the good of the community, behaviour which would be regarded as immature and dangerous, to Nashua, whereas it’s perfectly within the norms for a privileged but relatively junior member of an urban elite…

Oops. Guess who’s procrastinating writing a really boring report?

Thank you for the analysis – and for taking the time to write it all up! It is really encouraging for us to hear that readers are looking so deeply into the characters’ perspectives and motivations. And fantastic that people are ‘getting’ it.

Kip was interesting to RP with – I can vouch firsthand for the ‘like her as a character but dealing with her in person can make you want to tear your hair out sometimes’ element. Chezhnian is writing her now that her creator/player has moved overseas, and the other day we had a good long discussion puzzling out all the reasons why Kip is the way she is and does the things she does. She is definitely a fascinating character to work with – kudos to Chan for dreaming her up.

Yeah, Kip DOES have an impulsive streak a mile wide. She really needs to learn to think things through a little more.

Lazy J on January 8, 2013 @ 3:35 PM Reply

if anyone is going to be the problem maker it will be kip because of her attitude and her lack of ability in dealing tacfully with people

That horse is beautiful in the second panel, I keep staring at it. Mighty fine horse ya got there, Nameless, :)

Thank you! I tend to spend forever trying to get the dumb horses to look right… glad you like it. :)

I always wonder where shape shifters suddenly get their clothes from, when they change back …

eren on April 10, 2013 @ 3:00 AM Reply

Kip’s get magick’ed along with her as part of the ‘spell,’ along with whatever she’s wearing on her person (like Varony’s pack, there). Non- Tu Naul shapeshifters in this setting don’t get that convenience…
