So it’s the ring that holds the enchantment. How did it get chipped though? Johlan smashed his hand, not his thumb.

The crossguard of Morgen’s sword clipped it when Johlan hit him.

Do you mean when Johlan was pounding on him during the sparring match and Owings was parrying him? It’s conceivable that the ring impacted against the crossguard and was cracked in the opening of the match, with a chip dislodging after OW!-ings hand was broken. I don’t buy that strike to the hand forcing the guard against his thumb. (Yes, it’s nit-picking, I know.) Hey, for all anybody knows, the ring could’ve been cracked earlier and the sparring match just shook it loose.

Darn, I forgot to remove the the OW!-ings “pun” from the post. Please disregard. Once was enough.

For the sake of plot clarification, yes, it was chipped when Johlan broke his hand. I may have drawn the impact a little too cleanly for the sake of panel parse-ability – I’ll keep it in mind for revising later for the print version.

How did the ring band get repaired? they had to cut it off of him.

Then again, maybe THAT’S why the ring is acting up.

It’s still cut. It’s just hard to see when it’s drawn that small. The cut is by his thumb in the bottom two panels, and toward the bottom of the ring in the top one.
